Learn how to clam and oyster on the Hood Canal!
This is a day trip that we have been wanting to put on for years! When Ashley first moved to the Seattle area, she had a ravenous desire to learn more about the food systems of Washington - clamming, oystering, crabbing, fishing, foraging - but found it really difficult to find opportunities or classes to learn these skills. It took 10 years of trial and error and travel and questions to learn these skills and she has decided to give back to today’s students of the sea.
Join us on the tidal flats of the Hood Canal! This one day trip is a great introduction to clamming and oystering. We’ll dig for manilas at a remarkably low tide ( -2.51! ). We’ll be able to walk for ages with dozens of clams below our boots. We’ll then leave the flats and move to a public oyster beach just down the road to gather our limit. We can help provide tools, but you’ll need to acquire your yearly shellfishing license (which we can assist with ahead of time and would come in handy if you join our crabbing weekend on Lummi Island!)
We’ll close our event by sharing a meal together at a private dining room on the bluff overlooking the sound, Mt. Rainier, and even a little bit of Seattle. We’ll share good food and great tunes. Our menu will focus on our finds, all contributing a little to the pot (there will be plenty of shellfish to take home). Smoked oyster dip, spicy marinated clams with yogurt and flatbread, New York style clam linguine, shucked oysters with classic mignonette, baked oysters with ramps and cream, bistro salad, and tiramisu for dessert.
